Who we are
Salkantay.org is the Salkantay specialist arm of Inca Trail Reservations — a tour operator that has been sending trekkers over this pass for close to two decades. We are small on purpose: a maximum of twelve people per departure, local staff on every trip, and an office in Cusco you can walk into.
We sell one country and know it properly. That means the desert coastline, the volcanoes and craggy peaks of the sierra, and the dense jungle with its extraordinary range of plant and animal life — but above all it means the routes over the Vilcabamba range that we walk every week of the season.
Our guides
Our guides are local, licensed and multilingual — most are Quechua speakers who grew up in the communities around the range you will be walking through. They are the reason our reviews read the way they do: trekkers consistently name the guiding team, the cook and the porters as the best part of the trip, ahead of the scenery.
Every trek runs with a professional licensed guide, a cook, and pack support for the heavy equipment, so what you carry is a daypack. The trek pages list exactly what each departure includes.
Safety on the mountain
The Salkantay Pass reaches 4,630 metres, and altitude is the real risk on this route rather than terrain. Guides are trained in wilderness first aid and high-altitude emergencies, every group carries a complete first-aid kit and bottled oxygen, and guides run informal wellness checks throughout the trek.
We also build acclimatization into the itineraries that need it and advise it on the ones that don’t — see the altitude guide. Where evacuation is required, we have established protocols and access to saddle horses to reach vehicle access points.
Registration and credentials
Our United States operation is managed by Dual Source Enterprises Inc., trading as Inca Trail Reservations, registered as a California Seller of Travel, registration number CST# 2085372-40. We work with Amadeus, the global distribution system, for air and travel bookings.
Practically, that means your money is handled by a registered company under Californian consumer protection rules, and your flights and tickets are issued through established industry systems rather than informally. Payment terms are set out on the booking information page.
